A Safer Way to Smell Amazing
DIY Essential Oil Perfume
I didn't know why I kept getting headaches. They struck every date night like a plague, and I was ready to chalk it up to bad luck...
Until I saw a friend sharing about the sneaky yuck inside modern day perfumes. I thought, "Oh my! I only wear perfume on date nights!"
Cue a deep dive into perfume science. What I found, I cannot say I loved.
Sneaky Scents
Did you know the average fragrance (think "date night" perfume) contains about 14 secret chemicals that aren’t listed on the label?
How does this happen, you ask?
Due to laws protecting fragrance manufacturers from sharing “trade secrets” — aka their recipes — commercially sold perfumes are not required to publish transparent ingredient lists.
We know that many fragrance compounds are linked to hormone disruption and allergic reactions (Environmental Working Group), you are not alone in finding this concerning!
Further investigation led me to find that temporary allergic irritations to perfumes and topical fragrances aren’t uncommon at all. It can look like aggravated allergies, skin sensitivities, headaches, nausea, triggered asthma attacks and more.
My date night headaches? Not so much a mystery anymore!

Building Your Blend
With this new knowledge, I decided to ditch my traditional perfume and make my own. You can imagine my relief on that first date night when there was no headache to be found (while still smelling great!).
Now I am so thrilled to teach you!
The key to building the perfect blend is balancing scents.
Q: How do I do that?
A: top, middle, and base notes!
Top Notes
Considered the first impression scents, this is what you and others smell right away, and then will typically evaporate quickly due to the size of the molecules.
Grapefruit
Orange
Jade Lemon
Spearmint
This will make up ~ 25% of your blend.
Middle Notes
Also called the heart notes, these make up the central body of the scent and linger longer.
Jasmine
Lavender
Ylang Ylang
Cypress
This will make up ~ 50% of your blend.
Base Notes
Adding depth and richness to the blend, these made of the heaviest molecules that take the longest to evaporate.
Vanilla
Frankincense
Vetiver
Myrrh
This will make up ~ 25% of your blend.
