What You Need to Ditch and Switch for a Toxin-Free Bathroom: A Room by Room Guide to a Toxin-Free Home

If it’s your first time here, welcome! I’m walking you through your home one room at a time, and show you easy ways to change out mainstream products in your home for clean, healthier alternatives.

We’ve covered the common hidden chemicals in off the shelf products and tackled easy swaps and diys in the kitchen and now it’s time to talk about our bathrooms!

I know, I know… no one like to talk about the bathroom. It feels daunting! Cleaning toilets is no one’s favourite job, and now that we know a little more about the hidden villains in our homes, the bathroom feels like a scary room to begin to unpack. Thankfully, there are some very simple products that you can ditch and switch for a toxin-free bathroom!

When I discovered Young Living I began to explore clean living and I was shocked to learn that the average woman applies 60 chemicals to her body with her morning care routine! I was putting so many chemicals onto my body without even realizing it!

I have gradually been able to ditch and switch the majority of my personal care products to clean, more natural alternatives. And the best part is the swaps work the same or better than what I was using before!

What to avoid in the bathroom

The first step to swapping out toxic products is understanding what to avoid. There are three chemicals that are commonly found in personal care products and these are ones to avoid in your bathroom! Sodium laurel sulphate (a foaming agent), propylene glycol (which is antifreeze), and Trisloscan (a synthetic anti-bacterial agent) are all ingredients that are known to cause harmful affects on our bodies. You can read about these chemicals in more detail here.

The app “Think Dirty” is another great resource for determining the toxicity of products in your bathroom. The app provides a catalog of lots of products, and gives you a number between 1-10 of how toxic it is - 1 being clean and 10 being very dirty. Many of the products we were using before switching landed on the scale between 7-10! This included a number of the baby products we were using on our children at the time. I was SHOCKED!

Now that we know what to avoid when choosing products for our bathrooms, let’s talk about some safe swaps!

6 products to ditch and switch in your bathrooms

Ditch & Switch Your Bathroom Cleaners

Thieves Household Cleaner is the best and most versatile for all cleaning! (I think I say this in every blog post, ha ha) It is a fantastic all purpose cleaner for bathroom surfaces, and there are so many ways to use it for more specific, deep cleaning needs in the bathroom.

My next blog post in this series will include an amazing DIY soft scrub that will give you the extra elbow grease you need to tackle the bathroom.

Ditch & Switch Your Face Wash & Lotion

An evening skin care routine is SO important. At the end of the day I don’t want to be washing off my make-up (and my stress!) with a cleanser that’s harmful to my skin and body. I swapped out my drugstore face wash for Young Living’s Orange Blossom Face Wash and it is my absolute favourite! It cleans so well, smells amazing and I have found that a little goes a long way!

I follow-up washing my face with an application of Bloom Brightening Lotion. It’s a super moisturizing, light weight lotion. I have extremely sensitive skin and I have had no reaction to either of these products!

Young Living Lushious Lemon Foaming Hand Soap next to a white embroidered Young Living hand towel

Ditch & Switch Your Hand Soap

The amount of times we wash our hands in a day is a lot, and that adds up to a lot of exposure to toxins in traditional hand soaps. Young Living has a number of great hand soap options, or you can go the DIY route and make your own with Castile Soap, essential oils, and water. I’ll be sharing more on that in my DIY post coming up!

Various Young Living Savvy Minerals clean beauty products

Ditch & Switch Your Make Up

I am a 5 minute face girl! I stick with a basic daily make up routine that makes me feel flawless and confident. Making the switch to Young Living’s Savvy Minerals products was easy. The products they offer are timeless, easy to use and clean!

My favourite products are the Lengthening Mascara and Liquid Foundation. The Liquid Foundation is not yet available in Canada, but it can be shipped from the US to your door.

Young Living Savvy Minerals Eye Shadow Pallets

Other products I use daily include the Eye Shadow Pallets, which are beautiful and have such an amazing selection of colours, and the high quality makeup brushes.

8 fl oz bottle of Young Living Morning Start Bath and Shower Gel next to a hand-knitted bath poof

Ditch & Switch Your Shower Gel

Although Canada doesn’t currently offer the Young Living shower gel products, the American market does and we can have them shipped right to our door!

The Morning Start Bath and Shower Gel is a favourite - the fresh scent is a great way to wake myself up in the morning!

A white electric toothbrush and a tube of Thieves Whitening Toothpaste on a grey bathroom counter

Ditch & Switch Your Toothpaste

One of the BEST additions to the Thieves line has been the Thieves Whitening Toothpaste!  It has a fresh minty taste (which I love!), foams like traditional toothpaste (due to the baking soda ingredient) and does not include fluoride!

Start Cutting Out Toxins in Your Bathroom Today

I could go on and on about all the products we have ditched from our bathrooms and swapped for clean products… there are just so many that I LOVE!

It has taken time and effort to change everything over, but it is so worth it!
